Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – EMDR Therapy

EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a unique and increasingly popular form of therapy that is gaining recognition for its effectiveness in treating various mental health conditions. EMDR therapy utilizes bilateral stimulation to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences.

History of EMDR Therapy

Originally developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR therapy was initially used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR is based on the idea that when traumatic events occur, they can get “stuck” in the brain and continue to impact a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Shapiro found that focusing on specific memories or beliefs while engaging in bilateral stimulation helps to reprocess these traumatic memories and create new, more positive associations.

As research on EMDR therapy grew, its applications expanded to include a wide range of issues, such as eating disorders, anxiety, depression, phobias, and more.

What Happens During an EMDR Session?

There are eight steps or phases to the EMDR process. Our first session or two will be spent discussing some history and treatment planning. Next, we will identify specific coping mechanisms to help you manage any distress you may experience either during or after your sessions. We will then identify a specific ‘target” to address.

Once the above preparation steps are complete, I will guide you through re-visiting and re-processing the “target” by incorporating bilateral stimulation, which may include side-to-side eye movements, bilateral hand pulses, or tapping. The bilateral stimulation works to facilitate the brain’s natural ability to process, heal, and overcome psychological wounds. We will then work together to re-frame your core beliefs about yourself and the “target” in general.

While EMDR can be intense at times, you can be assured that I will be By Your Side every step of the way. I myself have experienced the healing power of EMDR and my clients also find it to be a truly transformative experience.
